Yuma desalting plant. Membrane degradation during test operations
An unacceptable, premature loss of salt rejection by cellulose acetate membranes was experienced during test operations. Phenomena related to this problem are discussed. Small scale tests were initiated to find a solution to the problem and to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms involved. Results are presented. It was found that removal of all free chlorine would solve the problem. In practice, this was accomplished by injecting ammonia in the RO feedwater. This cleared the way for operation of the main production plant.
