POWERED SEAWATER DESALINATION PILOT PLANT-PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED AND EXPERIENCE GAINED - Advances In Solar Energy Technology - YANBU SOLAR

The solar-powered seawater desalination pilot plant at Yanbu combines state-of-the art solar thermal power technology with a freeze desalination technique to produce 200 cubic meters of product water in a day.The data collected during the past two years of operation of the plant are currently being analyzed and technically documented. Operation and test results have indicated the potential of the plant as well as key problem areas within the broader perspective of research and development for solar thermal and desalination technologies.The PKI (Power Kinetics Inc.) point focus dish collectors concentrate the sun's radiation onto thermal cavity receivers, and the energy collected is turned into shaft power to produce refrigeration required for CBI's (Chicago Bridge and Iron Company) freeze desalination process. The paper describes briefly the integration of the two technologies earlier cited, significant experience, and the valuable knowledge gained to advance the development of both the technologies.
