Urban Order
The term “urban order” means both the ways in which cities are produced as ordered or orderly spaces, for example through planning, and the ordering or ranking of different cities based on selected measurable characteristics. Researchers have devised many ways of assessing order and rank, producing different hierarchies. Here, we critically review some debates about urban order, noting the exclusions these inevitably produce. Orderings other than those produced by academics are also highlighted, with a reminder of the uses of order as a comparative and evaluative index of urban competitiveness.
