Past geomorphic processes: The role of permafrost and periglacial processes in ice-free environments
In the ice-free environments of Antarctica, periglacial conditions occur everywhere and almost everywhere permafrost occur. Therefore, in Antarctica, more than elsewhere, the knowledge of the different periglacial and climate processes and related landforms is essential also for the conservation and the correct management of the ice-free areas and the ecosystems. Here a brief review of the main periglacial processes and landforms and their distribution in Antarctica is presented. In addition, a summary of the permafrost thermal conditions is also given.
