Facile synthesis of Ag/Cu-cellulose nanocomposite for detection, photocatalysis and anti-microbial applications

The prepared nanocomposite reports an simple method for colorimetric detection of Hg(II) ions using Ag/Cu-cellulose nanocomposite (NCs) in presence of glutathione and evaluation of its photocatalytic and antimicrobial activity. The characterization of nanocomposite was done by UV–visible spectrophotometer, particle size analyzer, TGA/DTA, FT-IR, TEM, XRD, EDAX, particle size analyzer and zeta sizer. Ag/Cu-cellulose NCs synthesised with a particle size of 18 ± 1.4 nm using chemical reduction method. An LSPR band of NCs was displayed at 428 nm and the color alteration of nanocomposite from brownish yellow colour to colourless was visualised and also by UV-vis absorption spectra upon accelerating the Hg(II) concentrations (20 nM -100 nM) in presence of glutathione with LOD of 4.9 nM. The prepared probe was determined to be highly sensitive and specific for detecting Hg(II). Hence, the present study can be templated for multiple applications including quantitative and qualitative Hg(II) determination from water samples in nanomolar level, effective anti-microbial activity against E. coli and Bacillus subtilis. The particle also shows highly efficient photocatalytic degradation of MB dye, hence the particles may be applied for the detoxification of toxic pollutants.
