A review on testing methods of metalworking fluids for environmental health
In this paper, the existing techniques for testing the environmental health of the Metalworking Fluids (MWFs) are reviewed. Metalworking Fluids (MWFs) are used in various metal cutting operations as coolants and lubricants. A comprehensive evaluation is carried out on existing standard testing techniques of the Metalworking fluids for biodegradability and eco-toxicity. The existing standards are sufficiently available to test the biodegradability and eco-toxicity of MWFs, many of which are based on the OECD test guidelines. Various standard biodegradability testing classifications are demonstrated in a tree diagram and all the available standard tests for biodegradability and eco-toxicity are tabulated in this paper along with their technical specifications. A Flow chart was drawn to differentiate between screening and simulation tests. The flow chart also helps to take decisions on the selection of tests for ready and inherent biodegradation of MWFs. This paper provides study on aquatic toxicity testing techniques as well.
