Advantages of Standard Contract Forms
The standard forms produced by the Engineers' Joint Contract Documents Committee (EJCDC) offer many advantages to engineers and others involved in the negotiation and preparation of agreements for professional engineering services. The most significant advantages are examined and summarized in this paper. The paper points out the need for coordination of the agreement between the owner and the engineer with the contract documents for construction. Significant provisions in the standard forms are explained and certain caveats presented with suggestions regarding the use of different forms proposed by the owner or modifications of the standard forms proposed by the owner or owner's counsel. A brief description of EJCDC and the manner in which standard forms of agreement for professional services and documents for construction contracts are produced, reviewed periodically, and published is included.
