Study on The Damage Indices of Concrete Members Reinforced with High-Strength Steel (HSS)

In this study, high-strength steel (HSS) effects on damage indices of four special moment frames and three beam-column connection specimens were experimentally studied under cyclical loading. The specimens with HSS rebars (with the yield strengths of 500 and 580 MPa) were designed and constructed based on the special seismic provisions of ACI 318-19. Then, several types of damage indices (from single types to combined ones based on such parameters as displacements, absorbed energy, and stiffness) were calculated according to the experimental results. Results showed that the higher-strength steel application expedited the failure process of the specimens. Moreover, the damage indices indicated that the specimen with HSS rebars as both the longitudinal and transverse ones had the greatest damage propagation velocity among the frames. As for the beam-column connections, the specimen with HSS rebars as just the longitudinal ones had the greatest damage propagation velocity, too. The results also showed that the displacement-based damage indices were less accurate than the other types of damage indices to study the damage behavior of the frame and beam-column connection specimens. On the other hand, the combined damage indices suggested by Bozorgnia & Bertero and Hwang & Scribner were more accurate than other indices.
